Your freedom of speech
Your freedom to read
Your privacy and
freedom from surveillance
are under threat

While global computer networks like the Internet open up wonderful possibilities for individuals, reactionary forces are attempting to restrict our freedom to speak and read and to conduct our activities in privacy, free from surveillance. Although these people often have respectable-sounding reasons for wanting to control what other people can and cannot do, their reasons rarely survive scrutiny. If they achieve their aims, we shall all be the poorer - we shall have lost some of our most cherished and guarded fundamental freedoms: privacy and freedom of expression.

Since mid 1994, numerous Australian governmental proposals have been announced with the aim of taking away your freedoms. While few of these plans have been carried out as proposed, the threats continue.

Today's world isn't quite the Stalin-inspired, totalitarian nightmare imagined by Orwell but it seems that almost every day we are presented with some new threat to our cherished freedoms, some new intrusion into our personal privacy. While EFA acknowledges that the world has changed in recent years, the actions of over-zealous governments and commercial enterprise need greater vigilance now than ever before.

Electronic Frontiers Australia has been working since 1994 to promote and protect the civil liberties of users and operators of computer based communications systems such as the Internet.

EFA needs your support to continue its educational and advocacy projects and activities, to fight against the Net becoming a tool of repression and increased surveillance.
